Why Pendulum?
It starts with a story. As so many of our beliefs in life do. In his young cowboy years, my father had the privilege of working with Greg Ward, a renowned trainer in the world of working cow horses. Greg worked with hundreds of riders over the years, and witnessed the wide variation in styles and timing of different riders. Sometimes a rider was heavy-handed, quick to react, harsh in discipline. Greg would explain it as being stuck on one side of the pendulum, and ask them to consider what would be like to allow themselves to swing, to move from their area of comfort, to try the other side. What would that look like? What could be achieved is we were willing to embrace the motion and let go of the grip holding us in place? This beautiful analogy was often a communication break through for riders. Whether they were to severe or too timid, just the act of trying, even once, the other side of the pendulum produced revelatory growth!
My father passed this story on to me, and I began to visualize my life in a new way. Not as an uphill climb or journey with a destination, but as a pendulum. A sway, a flexibility, a willingness to move with the tide of life, and live not just on one side or the other, or even in the middle! Living life on the pendulum means to embrace the possibilities of movement in our life. Try a shift to the left or right, see what change it creates! Perhaps your pendulum is swinging too rapidly and you need to slow down or pause in your reactions. Maybe you live life on only one side and lack balance. Sometimes we sit motionless and stuck and need to generate new momentum to hit both sides of life. The truth is, we may experience any or all of these at different times in our life. Together, we will use this powerful metaphor to explore where you are in life, where you want to be, and how we can work the pendulum to get there.
